A long bank holiday in Lavenham signals Summer's End.
Walks where we returned bellies full of blackberries, bags full of apples and damsons to make crumble, elderberry for cough mixture and wild yellow plums for munching. The following day we collected sloe and made our first sloe gin of the year.
Elias saw two rabbits but the highlight was the Elephant Hawk Moth caterpillar hanging from a shrub in an overgrown disused railway cutting.
Trees were the focus of our academic attention and a rare black poplar towered over our country walk rest.
Political correctness correctly went out the window when we gave the boys the bows and arrows we had bought for them back at the beginning of the summer. The imaginary exotic animal population of Lavenham was then hunted ruthlessy.
Evenings in the garden and Ben and I entertained by a gregarious little mouse who was not scared by us one little bit.
